He was never fond of the sea. It makes him sick. Preparing his mind and his body never worked. He would board the vessel with a focused visage and stance, boasting a half-hearted smile. A day passes and regret kicks in. Every time. Ends up missing firm land beneath his feet. Instead, he’ll be holding the ship’s railing for dear life, heaving. Throwing up overboard.
He felt a sense of shame. Deep at first, surfacing a little each time his head propped out over the choppy sea. Alia, his current lover, would take care of him. Her affection for Giacomo is projected as if she were treating an infant. He remains with no other choice but to succumb.
Alia was the daughter of the blacksmith of the Black Sun. She was an only daughter, treated like a princess. Her whole life was part of the company. Her father, Firma, kept Alia and her mother away from the brutal reality of life in the company. He tried, for the most part. She was a curious gal, always getting herself into trouble. She met interesting characters and was a swift learner in certain skills. Mostly combat skills and fending arts in battles and skirmishes.
Back to Alia and Giacomo. She still remembers the sunny morning, when a timid, quiet boy emerged from the commander's tent. All the children were happy to see a fellow boy. There were so few that you could count them all on one healthy hand.
Hellos, greetings and laughter were abundant that day. It was cheerful even for the adults to see such innocent smiles in a world of misery…
